David Martyn Lloyd-Jones the First Forty Years 1899-1939
Published in Hardcover by Banner of Truth (June, 1983)
Author: Iain H. Murray
Average review score:

A Great Portrait of a Great Man
The First volume of this work by Murray shows the dynamism of a man who strived for Christ-Exalting Power. After reading the is biography I can only ask myself, "Can such men live again?" What made Dr. Lloyd-Jones so used by God?

I suggest at least three factors:
1) He placed the origin of revival at the proper source, God. His theology of revival was supremely theocentric. He knew that true revival is when a Sovereign God awakens the hearts of his people. Such a revival proves real conversion.
2) Second to his power was the need for holy study. At a time when the academia in Britain were denying the sacred text, and with no conservative alternative, Lloyd-Jones filled the gap and held high the Scriptural banner. What was said of Edwards could be said of him: "He put fidelity to the Word of God above all else." Also was his constant study of great theologians like the Puritans, Jonathan Edwards, and Warfield.
3) Although this theme is brought out more in the second volume, he was more concerned with pleasing God than appeasing men. This is seen in him giving up a medical career for a pastorate. Would to God that there were more preachers who lived before an audience of one!

At times his theology will challenge one. His view on Baptism in the Holy Spirit is worth dialouging and debating. And for some, he will appear odd in that he was a Calvinist evangelist, a model for men to come. His message is desperately relevant for us today.

Stirring Account of Evangelical Leader
First volume of Murray's substantial biography on Martyn Lloyd-Jones stands head and shoulders above every biography I have ever read. What a great man of God was Lloyd-Jones, and what a great God he served. From the account of his childhood in Wales, to his prominence in Harley Street as a physician, to his conversion and subsequent ministry in Aberavon, this is a wonderful book. Not a story full of dramatic happenings, but rather the quiet obedience of a man who shunned publicity, but was honored by the God of heaven, and saw the mysterious and sovereign movings of the Spirit upon his hearers. Well documented with numerous sermon excerpts, newspaper quotes, and personal interview with the "Doctor" and his wife themselves, this was a fantastic book with which to end 1997. I shall treasure this volume always, and make a point to read it more than once more in the years to come. I thank God for this book and the inspiration it has been to me.

Desert Awakenings
Published in Hardcover by NorthWord Press (October, 1998)
Authors: Jeff Gnass and John Murray
Average review score:

Fantastic!Suggestive!Inspiring
Well,I had heard of this book before I saw it in a local bookstore, but I thought it wouldn`t be good,as the desert book "Western Horizon" was said to be better.
But I was wrong at this time. Already when I first looked inside it,I knew it would be amazingly suggestive for me. And I bought it. It was rather cheap for beeing such a book.
It features all kinds of deserted landscape from the US.
Some times,it doesn`t look much like desert, mostly in the Mojave, which the first chapter is about. Deserts are not at all lifeless places - in fact,it is full of wild palms, beautifull flowers and cacti with artistic shapes.
The second chapter treats the Sonoran Desert, and it,too, contains more of the diverse flora, especially the red cactus flowers.
In the third chapter, called Colorado Desert - Life on the Rocks, there are lots of such pictures too,but there is one special image that catches your attention immidiatley - pressure ridges in a salt pan, which looks like the finest crystals ever found!
The fourth chapter shows other kinds of desert. For you who like rocky deserts, this is something. It has fantastic sceneries from hundreds of feet high rocks,as well as a picture of dunes with white sand. That is the most lifeless of all deserts and the quietness is sometimes even frightening.
The fifth chapter is about The Great Basin Desert, and that is the largest desert of North America. Many pics in this chapter contains really fantastic views, and you`ll even find SNOW here!In a desert!Just amazin, isn`t it?Some of the most inspiring pictures are found here, and therefore, this is my favorite chapter. The special with those pictures are the mud formations at dusk.
The sixth chapter is "Painted Desert",which is also very inspiring, and here there are some pictures of the Colorado Plateau, which is fantastic rock formations where fossils of my favorite animals can be found (dinosaurs!). Many of the formations here are well-known from Western Movies. In this chapter, amazing pictures of Grand Canyon can be found as well.
I have now realized that this is my No.1 inspiration source for my animal stories. When I am drawing them,I am always looking at pictures of this book to find a suitable background for my dinosaurs. I am combining the best pictures. And then it is just to add the dinos. When I read this book,I pretend that I am trying to create a good dinosaur movie when looking at the pictures. It is incredibly inspiring, and ABSOLUTELY something for anyone who likes painting or look at landscapes.
You could spend (money) for "The Western Horizon" or (less) for this one. The choice is up to you. But I have made mine. Get inspired and save a lot of money by buying this one!

The desert never looked more beautiful
Jeff Gnass and John Murray have managed to convey with in the pages of this wonderful book the incredibly diverse and colorful landscapes that makeup the desert regions of the south western United States. Their photographic images are with out a doubt some of the best ever put to film. Tne text is entertaining as well with personal insights relating to visiting a particular area photographed. I never grow tired of looking at the images- they are as close as you can get without actually being there. Highly recommended for lovers of the desert regions or for those that would like to experience them but cannot get there.

Dining Out With Mr. Lunch

A Sleeper with Style
My older sister turned me onto this book - and she was right, as older sisters often are. It is a real gem. She discovered it when she was Downunder on holiday last month and brought it back with her. The author is an Australian journalist who writes insightful and human stories. Half the book features Australian writers, half features American, English and Canadian authors. Each chapter takes a different approach and you end it wanting more. I liked the humor, I liked the sharp observations, I liked the way he made me feel as if I had met the subjects. I just wish American journalists wrote like this - read it, you will enjoy the experience.

Mr Lunch dishes up a literary feast
It's fascinating when writers are put in the spotlight - some flourish and some flounder. This collection became compulsive bedside reading for me - it's not heavy on literary theory but it sure revealed the people behind the author's cloak in a personal, perceptive and frequently funny way. I really got the feeling that I was meeting the people interviewed - warts and all. Yet it was done so as to leave dignity intact. Vanities, secrets and courage were all revealed. It made me want to rush out and buy many of the subjects' books. I guess the best comment is that I was sorry to finish. I also liked the way the authors were such an international range - and I recommend the chapters on Antonella Gambotto, Kinky Friedman, Morris West and Brian Keenan in particular. More please.

Doctor Murray's Total Body Tune-Up: Slow Down the Aging Process, Keep Your System Running Smoothly, Help Your Body Heal Itself-For Life!
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Trd Pap) (28 August, 2001)
Author: Michael T., N.D. Murray
Average review score:

Comprehensive, well-organized, easy to read and understand!
Dr. Murray really has written a "whole body" book. By coming from the naturopathic viewpoint, he has made achieving and maintaining optimum health an obtainable goal without a lot of side-effect inducing prescriptions. He does not just list a series of steps to follow, but makes the reader a participant and advocate for his or her own health by providing explanations as to why the procedures work. He also provides rating scales so that the reader can prioritize the steps by personal need. If I can only have one health book, this is the one.

Couldn't put it down.
Last night I sat on the floor of my local bookstore enthralled in this book. As it is not yet payday and cheaper on Amazon, I didn't buy it. But, what a book. It is so easily organized. Besides the basic and known aging issues, Murray addresses others as well. He gives several "tune-up tiips" for each concern. He weaves in the words of Norman Cousins. He gives facts as well as suggestions for herbal, botanical and lifestyle treatments. I don't want to get too obsessed with aging, but I do want to know which supplements I can be incorporating into my diet. This book really helps me do that.

Family Evaluation: An Approach Based on Bowen Theory
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1988)
Authors: Michael E. Kerr and Murray Bowen
Average review score:

A Must Read for Family Therapists
This book explains Bowen's Extended Family Therapy Theory. This is one of the most important family systems theories in the history of family therapy and it is still one of the most widely used theories for working with families. Anyone that is studying family therapy should read this book as it is the seminal work on Bowen Therapy. Essential ideas such as triangling, emotional fusion, and intergenerational transmission are well explained.

One of the best things about this book is that it is highly readable. This book can be beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about families. It can be helpful to the lay person as well as to the professional family therapist.

Introduction to natural sytems
A rich introduction to Murray Bowen's natural systems theory. Explains relevance of the theory to clinical work with families, couples, and individuals. Also, briefly explores and contrasts the relationship of Bowen theory to sociobiology, evolutionary neurology, and analytic theory. Case illustrations are clear and helpful. Would recommend to social workers, psychologist, biologists, and those interested in a natural systems approach to human behavior. Although strong on evaluation and descriptions concerning emotional processes in human families and groups, there is less attention to therapy techiques. More of a book about thinking on relationships, than one of the clinical "how to" kind of presentations that have become standard fare in the family therapy field. I have read through Dr. Kerr's text several times and have studied its chapters separately. Each reread reveals additional applications and insights into the theory. Surely, a book that can grow with you! Dr. Bowen's epilogue is an added jem in which he offers perhaps his last written description of the development of the theory and his belief in the relevance of theory to the future. Personally, the book has influenced both my private and professional life.

Family Therapy in Clinical Practice
Published in Hardcover by Jason Aronson (April, 1995)
Author: Murray Bowen
Average review score:

Read this book if you know any people
It's rare to find books that are both academically credible and accessible to the layperson. This book is the exception, and the content is truly life changing. It is unfortunate that most of the people who read this book are psychologists or psychiatrists who see it as "just another method" and go back to their simplistic "find the problem and fix it" techniques.

Reading this book has helped me understand myself, my family, my work environment, my social environment, and human culture.

The family is seen as a unit vs. a collection of individuals
Dr. Bowen begins by exploring the mother/child bond to understand human functioning. Soon fathers are seen as vital to this understanding, then the nuclear and extended family. Multi-generational patterns, cutoffs, sibling positions, and triangles are some of the family issues explored. Bowen shows how this broad family perspective inpacts family therapy, as well as understanding societal emotional process.

Gathering Assets: The Best of Nick Murray
Published in Paperback by Robert a Stanger & Co (June, 1995)
Author: Nick Murray
Average review score:

It's not just about selling!
This is not just a sales book. It's about how to structure your business with truth and integrity, how to put your clients needs first, and how to have the guts to only do the kind of business that you really want to have. Murray nails one of the great truths of investing: most investors cannot reach their goals without investing mostly or entirely in stocks, and catering to their fears and helping them invest partially or completely in bonds can be viewed as a disservice to them. Murray suggests that if you cannot convince a prospective client of this fact, then they do not deserve you as an adviser. While I do not accept everything he says as gospel, I have been heavily influenced by his books and articles, and my investment advisory practice has thrived, even through the recent market decline. I continue to read his stuff whenever it comes out -- and you should too, if you're interested in building a business that will not only be profitable -- you will be proud to have it.

How to REALLY sell investments!
This book focuses on the client-needs approach of selling investments. It is a sales book that teaches how to use the right words to close the sale and teaches the registered representative why the "hot" investment is not always the "right" investment. Further, it teaches that the "right" investment is always the "right" sale.

George Whitefield's Journals
Published in Paperback by Banner of Truth (June, 1992)
Authors: George Whitefield and Iain H. Murray
Average review score:

Fascinating journal of a great man of God
I wish more great Christians had kept journals. Reading about someone's struggles in a biography sometimes seems a little too broad; lots of emotion is distilled down to a few pages. Reading about the day-by day-successes and failures of great Christians is much more realistic, far easier to apply in my own walk with God.

This is the four-year journal of George Whitefield, considered one of the co-founders, along with John Wesley, of the Methodists, outstanding open-air preacher, and one of Christ's greatest soldiers. Whitefield's labors for the Lord are a great encouragement to me, as well as a gentle reminder of how little I myself do. And there is a wealth of historical information here as well. One really gets a feel for what a trans-Atlantic crossing was like, and there is considerable information on life in colonial America.

Pricey, but well worth it.

Interresting window into the early 1700's.
This book contains Rev. George Whitefields letters from the year 1737 through 1741. Origonally published in the 1700's, this is an accurate reprint of the origonal. Written in the old english language, this ends up not being a hinderance, but an asset, as you concentrate on the words, translating them in you mind to modern english. It is very interesting
